Redesign your Lifestyle: Know its Pulse

September 22nd, 2007

Part 1 multi-series on Lifestyle Redesign

‘Oohhh, if I didn’t need this job I would be outta’ here right now.’ I have caught myself thinking, mumbling, yelling that phrase one too many times in my life. Although, when I said it the other day, a voice answered, “Would you?” Dumbfounded. I was stopped in my tracks by this one simple question and had no definitive come back. Luckily an alert that I had a new message in my email inbox gave me a relief, or so I thought.

When I opened the email the subject read, “Live Life Fully.”

(at this point, picture me crouched over my computer, looking over my shoulder and around my cube like someone had just sent me unsolicited junkmail porn). In actuality, the sender happened to be Higher Awareness, a company that I’ve subscribe to for years that sends me daily insights and inspirations. So much for relief.

As I read the message, I was gently reminded that the power to live life the way I want always involves choices- ones that need to be made constantly. It went further to read,

“Time is life. It is irreversible and irreplaceable. To waste your time is to waste your life, but to master your time is to master your life and make the most of it.”- Alan Lakein

Refuse to feel USED by life! Make full use of it instead.

To make full use of life, we initially need to take assessments of how we spend our time and it relation to our desired lifestyles.

That led me to think about working at my drab and uninspiring job to “make a living.” The way I feel after a day’s work at this job is nothing like making a living and more analogous to making a chronic illness (depression, hypertension, heart disease, A.D.D, you name it).

I knew I needed out, not because the job sucked in general – there were many people who worked at this startup who loved it- but because the job sucked for me. And although I work for a lifestyle development company doesn’t mean that I don’t have bills to pay.

What I decided to do on my next break was measure my lifestyle pulse. What came of it were a list of things that were characteristic of my recent actions and feelings which confirmed that my lifestyle still needed a redesign. I share it with you, so maybe it will help you know if yours is in need of a jumpstart as well:

8 ways to determine your lifestyle pulse is irregular

    8. You keep wanting to go to school (or whatever) but it “doesn’t fit” in your current schedule7. You wake up in the morning and you consistently just want to go back to sleep6. When you leave your job from working a normal day, you just want to go home and go to bed or do absolutely nothing5. You can’t remember the last entertaining thing you did out (since it’s requisite that you remember the activity, the club last weekend should be disqualified)

    4. You find yourself thinking and saying “I wish I could do (fill in the blank)” more and more and it’s starting to cause you tension, stress, etc

    3. The majority of your free time is spent being entertained. For example, useless internet browsing, excessive T.V watching especially reality T.V. - that is unless you are getting paid for these things!

    2. You are neglecting yourself personally, mentally, physically and spiritually

    1. You find yourself daydreaming and brainstorming things you can create and as a result get a serious case of chill bumps or feel that tingly sensation down your spine

If after reading this list more than 2 of the items describe your lifestyle, you may be due for a redesign, too. In this series I will share with you some of the tools, tips, etc that I am using (or have used) to take control of my time and live life fully

Stay tuned…
